IsDB Amplifies Support for Mauritania’s Key Development Sectors

by Adenike Adeodun

In a significant move to spur national development, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) has intensified its support for Mauritania, targeting critical sectors including energy, infrastructure, education, and agriculture. Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, IsDB President, underscored this commitment during his comprehensive talks with top Mauritanian officials in Nouakchott in October 2023, setting the stage for collaborative economic growth.

During his discourse with Mauritania’s Finance Minister, Mohamed M’Bady, Al Jasser lauded the government’s strides in socio-economic realms. He assured the IsDB’s steadfast assistance, particularly emphasizing the private sector, aligning with Mauritania’s broader developmental ambitions. The institution expressed preparedness to bolster Mauritania’s capacity building and diversification in synchronization with its strategic national objectives.

A pivotal element of Al Jasser’s visit was the forging of a new deal with Mauritania’s Minister of Higher Education, Niang Mamadous. The agreement focuses on founding regional higher education institutes, with special emphasis on expanding quality education access, instituting decentralized educational entities, and strengthening proficiency in sectors critical to Mauritania’s growth, such as agriculture.

According to a report by Energy Capital & Power, financial stability and growth prospects also dominated the conversation between Al Jasser and the Central Bank Governor, Mohamed Lemine Ould Dhehby. They delved into Mauritania’s fiscal health, leveraging IsDB’s Reverse Linkage mechanism for expertise sharing and augmenting national economic and social development programs.

Rounding out the discussions, Al Jasser and Mohamed Vall Mohamed Telmidy, head of the National Company for Industry and Mines (SNIM), evaluated their ongoing collaboration. The dialogue opened new paths for mutual endeavors, with IsDB expressing eagerness to fuel SNIM’s projects that focus on boosting production and enhancing industrial competence.

These consecutive meetings underline the IsDB’s comprehensive approach to supporting Mauritania across various strategic fronts, reaffirming its role as a pivotal development partner in the region.
