The Nguya Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility at Wison Heavy Industry’s shipyard in Nantong, China, was inaugurated on Saturday, according to an announcement made by the Italian energy giant Eni.

Nguya FLNG facility launched in China for Congo deployment

The Republic of Congo’s capacity to produce LNG will be increased with the installation of the new facility offshore. Alongside the current Tango FLNG, which has a capacity of 0.6 MTPA, the Nguya FLNG will function with a liquefaction capacity of 2.4 MTPA. Since December 2023, the Tango FLNG has been in operation. According to a statement from Eni, when both facilities are combined, the Congo LNG project’s overall liquefaction capacity will reach 3 MTPA by the end of 2025.

Eni and Wison partnership advances Congo’s energy exports

In 2022, Eni and Wison Heavy Industry inked a contract to establish the FLNG plant, marking the start of their partnership. By increasing the Republic of Congo’s capacity to produce and export LNG, this cooperation seeks to fortify the nation’s position in the world energy markets.

Eni’s dedication to making use of the natural gas resources in the area is demonstrated by the Nguya FLNG, the second such facility to be established in the Republic of Congo. The Republic of Congo’s rise as an energy exporting country was highlighted in February 2024 when it shipped its first-ever LNG cargo to Italy.

“We have been the first to believe in the value of Congo’s gas, primarily for domestic power generation and then for export,” said Guido Brusco, chief operating officer for Global Natural Resources at Eni, who hailed the development.

This LNG expansion is in line with Eni’s overarching plan to promote development in resource-rich areas like the Republic of Congo and increase the security of the energy supply. Eni hopes to guarantee sustainable and effective LNG production by utilizing its cutting-edge FLNG technology, which will benefit both the domestic and global energy markets.

According to reuters, through energy exports, the Nguya FLNG deployment is anticipated to boost the Republic of Congo’s economic expansion and make a substantial contribution to the world’s demand for LNG.
