Eni Advances Congo LNG Project with Launch of Nguya FLNG Hull

KEY POINTS

  • Nguya FLNG increases Congo’s LNG capacity to 3 mtpa, complementing Tango FLNG’s 0.6 mtpa output.
  • Congo LNG achieves 40 million safe work hours, highlighting commitment to safety and efficient execution.
  • Zero gas flaring reinforces Congo LNG’s alignment with global sustainability and energy transition goals.

Eni has launched the hull of the Nguya Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) vessel, a major component of the Republic of Congo’s growing LNG project, Congo LNG.

The vessel constructed at the Wison shipyard in China, is set to increase the project’s total liquefaction capacity to 3 million tons per annum (mtpa).

Nguya FLNG boosts capacity, production starts 2025

The Nguya FLNG, with a capacity of 2.4 mtpa, will complement the 0.6 mtpa Tango FLNG vessel, which began operations in December 2023. First production from Nguya is expected by late 2025.

However, the vessel is expected to be completed within three years of the contract signing, reinforcing the project’s focus on timely execution.

Congo LNG celebrates milestone: 40 million safe hours

The project underscores a significant milestone, according to Eni COO Guido Brusco, “with the successful launch of the Nguya FLNG hull, the Congo LNG project has reached an impressive milestone of 40 million hours worked without any Lost Time Injuries.”

Brusco further added, “This project underscores the project’s ongoing progress in valorizing Congo’s gas resources while capitalizing on local and international opportunities to deliver further value for our stakeholders.”

Advancing sustainability goals

As part of Eni’s sustainability goals, the project recorded zero gas-flaring, thereby minimizing the environmental impact

The Republic of the Congo is a leader in gas production. Congo LNG is pivotal to the Republic of Congo’s ambition to position itself as a major exporter leveraging abundant gas reserves and growing demand for cleaner energy.

As the Nguya FLNG moves toward completion, it promises to strengthen the Republic of Congo’s role in the international energy landscape, providing critical resources for the global energy transition.
