The African Nations That Are Leading in Solar Exports

Exploring how South Africa, Morocco, and Egypt excel in solar exports

by Adenike Adeodun

KEY POINTS

  • South Africa leads in solar exports with strong local production and expertise.
  • Morocco trades solar electricity with Europe and disseminates its expertise throughout Africa.
  • Egypt’s large-scale projects such as Benban Solar Park support its solar export evolution.

With the increasing focus on renewable energy in the world market, Africa is gradually positioning itself to be a major market for Solar energy.

Several African nations, which are blessed with enough sunshine have since then relied on this resource to fashion out and export solar power systems.

Ranging from the production of solar panels to becoming active exporters of solar systems and technologies, African countries like South Africa, Morocco, and Egypt are way ahead in the solar energy revolution in Africa.

These nations are at the forefront of the green energy revolution as well as generate a number of economic benefits domestically.

South Africa: A solar powerhouse

South Africa is a leader in solar energy production and exports in Africa.

The country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) has attracted billions of dollars in investments, resulting in the establishment of large-scale solar farms and manufacturing facilities.

Many of the South African companies such as ARTsolar and Sola group have solar panel plants that manufacture good quality solar panels, which are supplied to countries within the region and across the globe.

South Africa not only exports solar physically but technologically as well as local solar companies undertaking the designing and installation of systems in other African countries.

Furthermore, constant policies to localize production through certain government promotions also boosted the export of solar products in this country.

Morocco: Exporting solar energy and expertise

Morocco, home to the world-renowned Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex, has become a major exporter of solar energy expertise.

The Noor project is one of the biggest concentrated solar power (CSP) plants in the world, which produces excess electricity that Morocco sells to Europe through connections with Spain.

Such a strategic export is not only enhancing the Moroccan economy but also creating and enhancing the perception of Morocco as the key player in the renewable energy sector.

The country also exports knowledge and technical expertise. Moroccan firms, with support from the government’s National Energy Strategy, partner with other African countries to advance the generation of renewable resources.

This exchange of expertise underlines the position of Morocco as the center of solar research in Africa.

Egypt: Solar exports powering growth

Egypt has quickly climbed the ladder of solar power producers due to projects such as the Benban Solar Park, one of the largest in the world.

The park with installed power of 1.65GW has attracted fresh foreign investments and put Egypt in an advantageous place where it exports solar energy.

Egypt exports solar panels and parts to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region besides exporting technical know-how of installation and maintenance of the solar systems.

The government’s effort in building the renewable energy sector, especially under the Egypt Vision 2030 strategy, makes it possible for the country to expand the utilization of solar energy.

Challenges and opportunities

Despite their leadership, these nations face challenges in scaling their solar exports. This in turn prevents development due to expensive production, lack of funding, and weak base.

Also, Africa faces challenges from other international sensors, hitches that include competition from China among others.

But the advantages overpower the disadvantages. Growing reliance on renewable power sources globally makes Africa’s solar professions ready for expansion.

Investments in research, manufacturing, and regional partnerships can strengthen their competitive edge. Expanding trade agreements and collaborations with international organizations will also enhance Africa’s solar export capabilities.

Deepening exports and trade as well as agreeing on partnership with global bodies will also boost Africa’s exports of solar products.
