Chevron Nigeria Limited on Thursday celebrated academic excellence in Delta State, honouring top performing secondary school students at the 2025 Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition, an annual science contest it has sponsored for more than three decades.

The ceremony, held at the Petroleum Training Institute Conference Centre in Effurun, brought together students, teachers, education officials and industry stakeholders from across the state.

The competition, organised in collaboration with the Chemical Society of Nigeria and state education authorities, is designed to deepen interest in chemistry and encourage young Nigerians to pursue careers in science.

In a statement released on Friday, Chevronโ€™s Corporate Affairs General Manager, Olusoga Oduselu, said the event reflected the companyโ€™s enduring commitment to education and capacity building in its host communities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Jim Swartz, who represented the Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria Limited, said the company remained encouraged by the quality of students participating in the competition and the steady improvement in performance over the years.

โ€œWe are delighted to see the sustained commitment to the study of chemistry, as shown by the outstanding performance of students in this yearโ€™s competition,โ€ Mr Swartz said.

A long running partnership built around science education

According to Mr Swartz, Chevronโ€™s continued investment in the competition is driven by the achievements of past winners, many of whom have gone on to excel in science based disciplines within Nigeria and abroad.

He said the programme aligns with the companyโ€™s broader focus on education, workforce development and sustainable community growth.

The Awokoya Memorial Chemistry Competition is held in memory of the late Stephen Awokoya, Nigeriaโ€™s first chemistry graduate and a renowned academic, who died on 15 March 1985. Each year, students from different local government areas in Delta State compete through several stages, with finalists receiving plaques, certificates, cash prizes and educational materials.

Chevron said the highlight of the 2025 edition was the emergence of Omazuwa Samuel of St Augustine College, Oghara, as the overall winner.
