KEY POINTS

  • About 22 communities in Ibadan will experience daily power outages lasting three hours
  • IBEDC says the disruption is linked to road construction around Foodco Road and Idi Isin
  • The utility apologised to customers and said the outage is temporary

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, has announced a planned power outage that will affect many areas of Ibadan. They have warned residents to expect daily outages for a week because of road construction.

On Tuesday, the company that sells electricity said that the construction work on Foodco Road and Idi Isin has made it necessary to move some of its equipment and facilities in the area. The company said that the process would temporarily stop power from going to the affected feeders.

IBEDC says that from Monday, January 5, to Friday, January 9, 2026, electricity will be turned off for about three hours every day.

Communities affected by planned outage

The company said that at least 22 communities and groups of customers would be affected during the exercise. Alalubosa GRA, Ogunkola, the Museum, Akinola Maja, the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, the Forestry College, Lead City, the Lead British School, the Commissionaire, a nursing home, Sunrise Estate, Post Housing, the AMI Complex, ODUA, the Police Headquarters, Apampa, the Polo Club, Baale Akintayo, Blossom Heritage, Eleventh House, House 18, and The Heavens are all places that will be affected.

IBEDC called some of the places premium customer zones and said that the outage would move around feeders connected to the construction corridor.

A company spokesperson said that moving infrastructure was necessary to keep people safe and protect electrical assets from damage during the road expansion work.

The electricity company said sorry to customers who will be affected by the outage and asked residents and businesses to make other plans during the outage.

IBEDC said it is doing everything it can to finish the move as soon as possible so that power can be restored to normal once the construction-related changes are finished.

There are worries about the reliability of electricity in many parts of the country, and this announcement comes at a time when those worries are growing. The Kano Electricity Distribution Company said earlier this week that parts of Katsina metropolis lost power after a fire broke out at a substation. The company said that the affected areas were cut off from the rest of the world as a safety measure to protect lives and property.
