The Edo State House of Assembly has summoned the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company to appear before lawmakers over the persistent and worsening electricity outages across the state.
The directive was issued during plenary on Wednesday by the Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, who said residents and businesses in Edo have continued to suffer from unreliable power supply.
Agbebaku described the outages as unacceptable, noting that the hardship caused by poor electricity supply has continued to disrupt daily life and economic activities across the state.

Demand for clarification
Members of the House resolved to invite the electricity distribution company to provide a detailed explanation regarding the current power supply outages across Edo State.
They also want clarification on the companyโs policy regarding the energising of transformers that were provided by communities or facilitated by lawmakers.
The Assembly said the engagement with the companyโs management would help determine the next steps required to improve electricity service delivery in the state.
Lawmakers further stated that the House is prepared to explore legislative and oversight measures that could ensure better service and accountability in the electricity distribution sector.
They said the goal is to find lasting solutions that will ease the burden on residents and businesses struggling with unreliable electricity supply.
Following deliberations on the issue, the House adjourned plenary until Monday, March 9, 2026, when the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company is expected to appear before the Assembly.
