Israeli warplanes on Saturday evening carried out airstrikes on oil storage depots and refining facilities in Iran’s capital, Tehran, according to reports by Israel’s public broadcaster.
The attacks mark the first time Israel has directly targeted Iran’s oil infrastructure since the start of a broader military offensive launched jointly with the United States last week.
In a statement, the Israeli military confirmed that it had initiated a new wave of strikes aimed at key infrastructure in Tehran as part of its ongoing campaign against Iran.
Explosions Rock Tehran Following Airstrikes
Reports from Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency said multiple explosions were heard across Tehran shortly after the strikes were carried out, indicating significant damage to the targeted facilities.
Israel’s public broadcaster KAN reported that the Israeli Air Force specifically targeted oil storage tanks and refining installations, which are critical components of Iran’s energy sector.
Following the attack on its refinery facilities, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had retaliated by launching missiles at the Haifa refinery in Israel.
Iranian state-linked Fars News Agency reported that the missiles struck the Israeli facility as part of Tehran’s response to the strikes on its energy infrastructure.
Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply since February 28 when the United States and Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran. The strikes reportedly killed more than 1,000 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, over 150 schoolgirls, and several senior Iranian military officials.
In response, Iran has launched multiple retaliatory attacks targeting U.S. military bases, diplomatic installations, and personnel across the region, as well as several Israeli cities.
