KEY POINTS

  • A tanker fire along Lekki-Epe Expressway damaged Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders, causing widespread power outage.
  • Several communities including Sangotedo, Awoyaya, Eputu, and Kajola were affected by the blackout.
  • EKEDC says repair work is ongoing and electricity will be restored once damaged infrastructure is replaced safely.

A major blackout has hit several parts of Lagos State following a fire outbreak along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC, has confirmed.

The blackout occurred after a moving vehicle reportedly collided with a stationary gas tanker, igniting a blaze that damaged key electricity infrastructure in the area.

According to EKEDC, the fire severely affected the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders, destroying vital conductors and overhead line components.

The damage forced the shutdown of electricity supply to multiple communities dependent on the affected feeders, leading to widespread blackout conditions.

Technical Teams Begin Repairs, Residents Urged to Stay Cautious

The distribution company explained that engineers have been deployed to replace the damaged components and restore supply. EKEDC also apologised for the inconvenience, assuring residents that power would be restored as soon as it is safe and technically feasible.

The company stressed that safety remains a priority, especially given the extent of damage caused by the fire. Residents in affected areas were advised to remain cautious while repair work continues.

Areas impacted include communities connected to the Medallion feeder such as Medallion Company, alongside locations served by the Ibeju 33kV feeder. These include Sangotedo, Majek, Fidiso, Awoyaya, Container, Eputu, Lagasa, Losoro, Kajola, and Onisan.

The outage has disrupted commercial activities and daily life in these communities, many of which rely heavily on stable electricity for businesses, cold storage, and residential needs.

The blackout comes shortly after a gas explosion earlier the same day in the Ajah axis of Lagos. The explosion reportedly killed two people and destroyed warehouses and roadside shops near the Tera Ahmed bus stop in Sangotedo, further compounding disruptions in the Lekki-Epe corridor.

With both incidents occurring within hours, residents and business owners in the area now face safety concerns and economic losses, while awaiting restoration of electricity supply.
