The NNPC/Seplat Joint Venture has screened 23,447 people, performed 797 eye surgeries, and distributed more than 13,525 eyeglasses free of charge under its “Eye Can See” Corporate Social Investment programme.
Speaking at the 2026 edition launch in Owerri, Director of External Affairs and Social Performance at Seplat Energy Plc, Mrs. Chioma Afe, represented by Mrs. Esther Icha, said the programme aims to improve the health and wellbeing of host communities by providing free eye screenings, cataract surgeries, and reading glasses.
She added that beneficiaries are also screened for other medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Participants receive professional counseling, medications, and referrals where necessary.
Three-day outreach draws large turnout across communities
The three-day outreach, held from March 24 to March 26, 2026, in Owerri, attracted a large turnout of residents from across Imo State and neighboring communities. On average, about 700 people were screened daily.
Afe noted that the high cost of eye care services makes the intervention critical, stressing that the NNPC/Seplat JV remains committed to sustaining the programme. Since its launch in 2017, the initiative has continued to expand access to quality eye care for underserved populations.
