KEY POINTS

  • Cooking gas price has risen to about ₦1,500 per kg, making a 12.5kg cylinder cost ₦18,750.
  • Supply shortages persist, with only a few major players such as Dangote Refinery, Ardova Plc, and Navgas holding stocks.
  • Rising demand, logistics costs, and inflation are worsening household energy expenses across Nigeria.

The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has surged again across Nigeria, with a 12.5kg cylinder now selling for about ₦18,750, while the cost per kilogram has risen to approximately ₦1,500.

This represents a sharp increase from about ₦1,300 per kilogram recorded in many parts of the country just a month earlier, marking a rise of more than 15 per cent and intensifying pressure on household energy budgets.

Market surveys and industry reports show that the latest spike is being driven by worsening supply shortages and rising distribution costs across major depots nationwide.

Industry data indicates that only a few major operators currently have available LPG stocks for the domestic market.

These include the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Ardova Plc, and Navgas, which are reportedly the only significant suppliers still maintaining commercial volumes of cooking gas.

The shortage has led to tightening supply conditions across retail outlets, forcing prices upward in many parts of the country.

Rising demand and logistics costs worsen price pressure

Analysts attribute the price hike to a combination of factors, including increased domestic demand, transportation costs, and limited supply from depots.

More households and businesses are switching to LPG due to the high cost of petrol and diesel, as well as unreliable electricity supply, further straining existing gas availability.

In addition, the cost of transporting LPG using diesel-powered trucks has continued to rise, adding to the final price paid by consumers.

Amid rising costs, energy users are being advised to adopt more efficient cooking habits to reduce gas consumption.

These include preparing ingredients before lighting the burner, using pressure cookers for tough foods, covering pots while cooking, and ensuring burners are clean to maintain a blue flame for efficient combustion.

Experts also recommend soaking grains like beans and rice before cooking to reduce cooking time and gas usage.
