Eskom Launches Unit to Drive South Africa’s Renewable Energy Push

South Africa’s state-owned power utility, Eskom, has launched a dedicated unit known as Eskom Green to accelerate the development of large-scale renewable energy projects. The initiative is designed to strengthen the utility’s role in the country’s clean energy transition and support long-term power system reforms.

The new unit has been mandated to help deliver up to 40GW of renewable energy capacity by 2040. This target aligns with South Africa’s integrated resources plan and forms part of broader efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix away from heavy reliance on fossil fuels while improving energy security.

Eskom said the establishment of Eskom Green is in line with the 2025 Integrated Resources Plan, which outlines a structured pathway for expanding renewable energy infrastructure. The utility aims to position itself as a key driver in achieving national decarbonisation and electricity supply goals.

Focus on solar-driven project pipeline

The renewable energy pipeline under Eskom Green is expected to be heavily weighted toward solar photovoltaic projects. The strategy reflects growing investment interest in solar power across South Africa and the wider region as costs continue to decline and deployment scales up.

The creation of Eskom Green signals a broader strategic shift for the utility, moving beyond conventional power generation to large-scale renewable development.
