KEY POINTS
- TCN plans an eight-hour Abuja power outage.
- Kubwa, Bwari and parts of Dutse Alhaji are affected.
- Maintenance will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has announced an eight-hour electricity interruption in parts of Abuja to allow engineers to carry out planned maintenance at the 132/33kV Kubwa Substation.
TCN said the exercise is scheduled to take place from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., during which electricity supply to several communities will be interrupted.
According to TCN, the maintenance is necessary to replace faulty equipment at the Kubwa transmission substation.
The maintenance team will replace a faulty 33kV NIPP feeder circuit breaker and a punctured yellow-phase current transformer.
The equipment replacement is expected to improve the reliability and safety of the transmission infrastructure serving the affected areas.
TCN said the planned interruption is necessary to enable its engineers to complete the work safely and efficiently. The maintenance will affect electricity supply to customers in Kubwa, Bwari, Army Resettlement and parts of Dutse Alhaji, as well as adjoining communities.
TCN explained that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company will be unable to take electricity from the transmission network and distribute it to customers in the affected areas during the maintenance period.
Residents and businesses in the affected communities are therefore expected to experience a prolonged power interruption during the eight-hour window.
TCN explains reason for interruption
The transmission company said the outage is temporary and linked specifically to the planned maintenance work.
Replacing the faulty feeder circuit breaker and damaged current transformer is expected to address equipment problems at the substation and support the continued operation of the transmission network.
The exercise also forms part of efforts to maintain critical electricity infrastructure and prevent equipment faults from developing into more serious disruptions.
Once the maintenance is completed, electricity supply is expected to resume to the affected areas through the distribution network.
The announcement gives residents, businesses and other electricity users in the affected communities an opportunity to make alternative arrangements for the period of the interruption.
For businesses and households that depend on electricity for daily activities, the eight-hour outage could affect operations, particularly during the daytime maintenance window.
TCN’s planned intervention, however, is aimed at replacing faulty equipment rather than responding to an unplanned system failure.
The company did not indicate that the outage would extend beyond the scheduled 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. period.
