Several communities in Niger State and parts of the North East are experiencing temporary power outages as the Transmission Company of Nigeria begins scheduled maintenance on critical transmission facilities.
The company said the planned work affects areas supplied through the Fakun Transmission Substation in Niger State and sections of the Dadin Kowa to Biu transmission corridor linking Gombe and Borno states.
Officials say the outages are part of routine upgrades aimed at improving safety and reliability on key parts of the national grid.
Maintenance at Fakun substation in Niger State
The Transmission Company of Nigeria said engineers have begun maintenance work on a 150 megavolt ampere 330 by 132 by 33 kilovolt transformer known as TR1 at the Fakun Transmission Substation.
Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at the company, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to her, the exercise started on Wednesday, March 4, and will continue until Thursday, March 5, with daily operations scheduled between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The work involves the installation of SERGI fast depressurization technology designed to prevent transformer explosions and fires, a safety system increasingly used in modern power infrastructure.
The maintenance means the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company cannot draw electricity from the facility during the exercise.
Communities expected to experience outages during the period include New Bussa, Kaiama, Wawa, Agwara and nearby areas in Niger State.
A separate maintenance operation is also taking place along the 330 kilovolt transmission line connecting Dadin Kowa and Biu.
The company said engineers scheduled a planned outage on Wednesday to replace damaged insulators on about ten transmission towers located along the route.
The line supplies electricity to communities around Dadin Kowa and Biu, which sit between Gombe and Borno states.
