KEY POINTS

  • NUPRC has launched an investigation into a gas bubbling incident in Bille community, Rivers State.
  • Early findings suggest a possible subsurface geological cause, with detailed studies ongoing.
  • Authorities assure residents of safety measures, stakeholder collaboration, and long-term solutions.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, has commenced an investigation into a gas bubbling incident reported in the Bille community of Rivers State, raising concerns over public safety, environmental impact, and residents’ health.

In a statement issued by the NUPRC Chief Executive, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, the agency assured residents that it is actively coordinating efforts across the oil and gas industry to address the situation and provide a lasting solution.

Eyesan noted that the NUPRC empathizes with the affected community and recognizes the seriousness of the development.

She confirmed that a detailed investigation has been launched to uncover the root cause of the gas seepage and recommend both immediate and long-term remedial actions.

According to her, the incident triggered a coordinated technical response in line with regulatory protocols. This includes assessing the scale and nature of the gas bubbling, identifying its source, and determining possible causes, while also developing mitigation strategies.

NUPRC Findings linked to sub-surface geological activity

Preliminary findings from field observations suggest that the phenomenon may be linked to subsurface geological activity, potentially influenced by multiple underlying factors. However, she emphasized that comprehensive geotechnical and geological studies are ongoing to establish definitive causes and guide appropriate interventions.

The NUPRC is collaborating with relevant stakeholders to ensure the investigation delivers accurate, evidence-based outcomes that will support sustainable solutions.

Reaffirming its commitment, the commission assured the Bille community that all necessary steps would be taken in accordance with regulatory standards and global best practices to resolve the issue.

Residents were also urged to remain calm, adhere strictly to safety guidelines, and follow public health advisories issued by authorities, as efforts continue to fully understand and address the situation.
