Camco Completes Horizontal Well in Libya’s Sarir Field, Sets New Regional Drilling Benchmark

Camco Oil Services, a subsidiary of the Edgo Group, has successfully drilled and completed a re-entry horizontal well in Libya’s Sarir oil field in partnership with the Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO).

The operation represents a significant technical achievement for Libya’s oil and gas industry, with Camco describing the project as a new regional benchmark for horizontal drilling at comparable depths and reservoir targets.

The successful completion highlights the growing application of advanced drilling technologies in Libya and underscores efforts by local and international oil service companies to improve efficiency, reservoir recovery and production performance across the country’s oil fields.

According to Camco, the drilling operation was completed ahead of schedule, with both the curve section and the horizontal drain hole drilled in less than two weeks.

The company said the speed of execution established a new regional record for similar horizontal drilling operations.

The project also achieved 100 per cent of its planned drain length and full reservoir contact, meaning the well successfully reached the targeted length within the reservoir and maintained the intended geological exposure.

Camco said all planned geological and directional objectives were achieved during the operation.

Advanced technology improves reservoir access

The drilling project relied on a combination of advanced technologies, including Logging While Drilling (LWD), geosteering and reservoir navigation systems.

These technologies enabled the drilling team to continuously monitor subsurface conditions and make precise adjustments to the well’s trajectory.

By improving the accuracy of the well’s placement, the technologies allowed the drilling team to maximise contact with the targeted reservoir interval and increase exposure to potentially productive sections of the formation.

The approach is particularly important in horizontal drilling, where accurate well placement can have a major impact on reservoir access and overall well performance.

Camco reported that the project also delivered a strong rate of penetration (ROP), with drilling performance exceeding that recorded in offset wells targeting the same reservoir interval.

The higher drilling rate contributed to the operation being completed ahead of schedule while maintaining the required technical and operational standards.

The company said the result demonstrates the potential for improved drilling efficiency through the combination of advanced technology, technical expertise and close cooperation between the drilling contractor and the field operator.

Despite the technical complexity and accelerated pace of the operation, Camco said the project was completed with a clean Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) record.

Maintaining safety standards throughout the operation was highlighted as an important component of the project’s success, particularly given the technical demands involved in drilling a horizontal well and navigating the targeted reservoir.

The achievement therefore combines improved drilling speed and reservoir contact with the maintenance of operational safety standards.
