KEY POINTS

  • NWD maintained 188 wells and drilled 21 new wells.
  • Unpaid client bills are affecting equipment maintenance.
  • NOC wants greater use of NWD to support oil production.

Libya’s National Oil Wells Drilling & Workover Company, NWD, has completed maintenance on 188 oil wells and drilled 21 new wells for several subsidiaries of the National Oil Corporation (NOC), strengthening efforts to sustain and increase the country’s oil production.

The company disclosed the figures during its annual technical and financial meeting with the NOC at the corporation’s headquarters in Tripoli.

The meeting reviewed NWD’s operational performance, drilling and well-maintenance activities, equipment readiness and plans to improve its services to NOC subsidiaries.

NWD said it had also expanded integrated drilling projects and established a Drilling Engineering Department as part of efforts to strengthen the technical capabilities of its workforce.

Despite the progress, NWD identified delayed payments from client companies as one of its major challenges.

The outstanding debts are affecting the company’s ability to purchase spare parts, maintain and upgrade equipment and keep its drilling rigs operating efficiently.

NWD management called for continued support from the NOC to resolve outstanding receivables owed by operating companies, saying this would help the company maintain its fleet and implement planned drilling and maintenance programmes.

NOC Pushes for Greater Use of Local Capacity

The meeting stressed the need for NOC subsidiaries to prioritise NWD for drilling and well-maintenance activities.

Greater use of the company’s equipment, expertise and workforce is expected to support ongoing operations while helping NOC subsidiaries implement their production plans.

The NOC also reviewed measures aimed at improving operational efficiency, strengthening safety systems and upgrading NWD’s fleet and equipment. The discussions form part of the NOC’s wider 2026 technical and financial reviews of its subsidiaries.

The meetings are intended to identify operational and financial challenges, develop solutions and improve the efficiency of Libya’s oil industry.

For NWD, maintaining drilling rigs, completing well-maintenance programmes and expanding drilling capacity will remain important to supporting Libya’s efforts to increase oil production.
