  • The CGG praised NNPCL’s ₦66-per-litre petrol discount as relief for Nigerians facing rising living costs.
  • The promotion, introduced on October 1, has been extended until October 31 and is available through the NNPC Fuel App at participating stations.
  • The coalition urged other petroleum companies to introduce similar relief measures without relying on public funds

The Coalition for Good Governance, CGG, has praised the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, for offering a ₦66-per-litre petrol discount, describing the initiative as a timely intervention for Nigerians struggling with rising living costs.

The coalition said the temporary price reduction was providing some relief to motorists, transport operators and businesses facing higher fuel prices, transportation expenses and other operating costs.

In a statement signed by Comrade Danjuma Bello on Monday, the group commended the national oil company for extending the discount, which was introduced on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The promotion, initially introduced as a temporary measure, has been extended until October 31, allowing consumers to continue benefiting from reduced petrol prices at participating NNPCL retail outlets nationwide.

Discount Offers Relief Amid Rising Living Costs

The coalition said the initiative came at a difficult time for households struggling to meet their daily needs, with rising transportation costs and the prices of essential goods putting additional pressure on family budgets.

It noted that reducing the cost of petrol, even temporarily, could help motorists save money and potentially ease some of the pressure on transport fares and the cost of delivering goods and services.

According to the group, the discount represents a practical response to the economic challenges facing Nigerians, particularly transport operators and small businesses whose activities depend heavily on fuel.

The coalition also commended NNPCL for prioritising public transport operators, saying the approach could help extend the benefits of the initiative to a wider section of the population.

“The NNPCL’s decision to forgo part of its retail margin and pass the benefit directly to consumers is quite helpful and beneficial to citizens across the country,” the statement said.

The CGG said the discount was particularly commendable because it was funded from NNPCL’s retail margin rather than public funds.

It argued that the arrangement demonstrated how businesses could support consumers during periods of economic hardship without placing additional pressure on government finances.

The coalition maintained that such an approach could provide targeted relief while preserving market-based fuel pricing, rather than reintroducing a government-funded petrol subsidy.
