In a significant stride toward environmental sustainability and adherence to global environmental standards, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has extended accolades to the joint venture partnership between NNPC Limited and TotalEnergies. This commendation comes in the wake of their achievement in attaining zero routine gas flare across all TotalEnergies’ assets in Nigeria, a milestone that marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s energy sector.

Ekpo, through a statement delivered by his spokesperson, Louis Ibah, underscored this achievement as a testament to the collective commitment of the Nigerian government, the operating companies, and other stakeholders within the industry. This commitment is aimed at fostering environmental stewardship and championing sustainable development within the energy sector, which is crucial for the country’s economic growth and environmental sustainability.

The minister highlighted that TotalEnergies’ accomplishment of eradicating routine gas flaring in its exploration and production operations, particularly in OML 100, is in perfect alignment with the Federal Government’s policy. This policy positions gas as a crucial transition fuel, pivotal for Nigeria’s journey towards a sustainable energy future. It also exemplifies the fruitful synergy between the government and private sector entities like TotalEnergies in setting the stage for a sustainable energy future for the nation.

“I commend TotalEnergies for leading by example, demonstrating that with commitment, innovation, and collaboration, we can achieve our environmental goals while boosting socio-economic development,” Ekpo stated. He further expressed his hopes that the success realized in OML 100 would serve as an inspirational beacon for other companies, both within Nigeria and on the global stage, to adopt sustainable practices in energy production.

This acknowledgment came shortly after the NNPC Ltd/TotalEnergies Joint Venture publicized their attainment of zero routine gas flare status across all their Nigerian assets. This venture, holding concessions in four leases, had previously achieved zero routine flaring in OML 99 (2006), OML 102 (2014), and OML 58 (2016). With OML 100 now also achieving this status, it marks the cessation of routine flaring activities across all its operations.

The significance of this achievement extends beyond the immediate environmental impact. It represents a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 341KtCOâ‚‚e/yr, stemming from the elimination of the last routine flare volume of about 12 million standard cubic feet per day (12MMscf/d) of gas. This is a substantial step forward in the global fight against climate change and a clear indication of Nigeria’s commitment to environmental sustainability and adherence to international environmental standards.

In parallel to these developments, the Nigerian energy sector continues to face various challenges, including the economic strain on businesses and the broader implications for the nation’s economy. Within this context, the efforts by NNPC Ltd and TotalEnergies to mitigate environmental impact while advancing Nigeria’s energy capabilities are particularly noteworthy. These efforts not only contribute to environmental conservation but also play a critical role in shaping the country’s energy landscape in alignment with global sustainability goals.

As Nigeria continues to navigate the complexities of energy production, environmental sustainability, and economic development, the achievement of zero routine gas flare by NNPC Ltd/TotalEnergies Joint Venture stands as a significant milestone. It underscores the potential for achieving environmental and economic objectives through strategic collaboration between the government and the private sector. Moreover, it sets a precedent for other companies in the industry to follow, reinforcing the importance of sustainable practices in ensuring the long-term viability of Nigeria’s energy sector.

This milestone also reflects the broader global movement towards sustainable energy production and the reduction of carbon emissions. It aligns with international commitments to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, positioning Nigeria as a proactive participant in global efforts to combat climate change. As the world moves towards greener energy solutions, Nigeria’s achievement in eliminating routine gas flaring serves as a powerful example of what can be accomplished through dedication, innovation, and collaboration.

In conclusion, the NNPC Ltd/TotalEnergies Joint Venture’s success in achieving zero routine gas flare across all its Nigerian assets is a commendable milestone that highlights the synergy between government policies and private sector initiatives in promoting sustainable energy production. It exemplifies Nigeria’s commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable development, and adherence to global environmental standards, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable energy future.
