Nigeria has commissioned the first phase of a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) facility with a capacity of 3.1 million standard cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) or 84,000 standard cubic meters per day (scm/d). This facility, located on the Benin-Sagamu Express Road in Ogun State, aims to enhance gas availability along Nigeria’s Western-Southern corridor, which houses some of the country’s largest industrial clusters.
Plans are in place to double the project’s capacity to 6.2 MMscf/d in the future, ensuring that demand continues to be met as industrialization advances in Nigeria. This development aligns with the Nigerian government’s Decade of Gas initiative, promoting gas as a catalyst for industrial growth.
Tetracore Energy Group celebrated the launch on social media, stating, “What better way to start a new week than to bask in the success of the launch of our CNG facility of capacity 3.1 MMscf/d (84,000 scm/d) and groundbreaking of our LNG facility.”
Nigeria ranks 38th globally in natural gas consumption, according to Worldometer. The country held an estimated 206.5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proven natural gas reserves at the beginning of 2023. As a major resource in Nigeria’s energy mix, the strategic development of CNG and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) sectors can significantly contribute to the country’s economic diversification, environmental sustainability, and overall economic growth.
The CNG plant is near the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s Gas Marketing Limited (NGML) connection point, linking to the Escravos-Lagos Pipeline. This pipeline is the main gas transmission line between the Niger Delta and Lagos, ensuring reliable pressure for efficient CNG production and distribution to both western and southern markets. The facility is equipped with advanced compression technology and an inbuilt fire suppressant system, ensuring safety and optimal performance. It boasts an energy conversion efficiency rate of over 90%.
This project is expected to enhance local energy accessibility and provide a cleaner alternative to traditional energy sources. By utilizing CNG, the company aims to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a more sustainable energy landscape in Africa.
The additional planned 10 MMscf/d LNG facility will further contribute to Nigeria’s energy independence. Designed to produce and distribute LNG efficiently, this facility will provide the country with an environmentally friendly energy source. It will be particularly instrumental for industries such as transportation and power generation. Additionally, the modular nature of the facility allows for scalable expansion and adaptability to meet the region’s growing energy needs.
These facilities’ strategic location and advanced technology are set to play a crucial role in Nigeria’s energy future. By enhancing the availability of natural gas, the country can reduce its reliance on traditional energy sources, lower carbon emissions, and support sustainable economic growth.
