The South African Petroleum Industry Association (Sapia) has rebranded itself as the Fuels Industry Association of South Africa (Fiasa) in a move to adapt to global energy shifts. This change highlights the organization’s broadened focus beyond traditional petroleum, aiming to embrace a wider array of energy sources amidst growing environmental concerns.
Avhapfani Tshifularo, the executive director of Fiasa, highlighted this transformative shift in a recent announcement. “The transition from Sapia to Fiasa marks a critical evolution in our mission. It extends our reach across various types of energy solutions that will power both current and future mobility needs,” Tshifularo explained. He emphasized the organization’s commitment to being at the forefront of designing a diverse energy landscape that promises inclusive energy solutions for South Africa.
The renaming is a response to several urgent environmental imperatives, such as the need to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. It also aligns with South Africa’s ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Fiasa plans to advocate for and implement strategies that advance low-carbon fuels, contributing to a secure and sustainable energy future for the country.
“This rebranding reflects our dedication to all transport energy sources,” Tshifularo stated. He pointed out that the interests of the energy and mobility sector necessitated an association that goes beyond traditional energy focuses, encompassing a broader view that includes energy, transport, and mobility collectively.
Tshifularo also addressed the global urgency to restructure economies in light of climate change challenges, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. “While each country’s journey and pace of change differ, it’s clear that transitioning to lower carbon energy carriers is crucial. In South Africa, we are already seeing policies being introduced to reduce dependence on carbon-intensive energy sources,” he added. Over the next three decades, Fiasa aims to set a proactive agenda in the industry, particularly in energy for transport. “We see the industry playing a vital role in the energy transition, which is crucial for our economic and environmental future,” Tshifularo noted.
Looking ahead to 2027, the implementation of a new clean fuels program is expected to facilitate the introduction of new vehicle technologies and cleaner energy sources. These include sustainable aviation fuel and biofuels that can be blended with traditional fossil fuels. “Our ultimate goal is to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels and help decarbonize the economy. As part of the broader energy industry, we are committed to supporting efforts that reduce greenhouse gases and address the urgent issue of climate change,” Tshifularo said.
Electrification of transport also forms a part of Fiasa’s vision, aiming to reduce oil demand and further decrease the carbon footprint of the transportation sector. This shift represents a significant pivot towards sustainable energy practices that could redefine South Africa’s energy landscape in the years to come.
