Orion Minerals Triumphs with AAMEG Award for Africa Community Ties

Australian Mining Giant Shines for its Commitment to Local Communities

by Motoni Olodun

Orion Minerals, a leading mining company from Australia, has achieved significant praise for its exceptional community involvement in South Africa, receiving the prestigious “Best Innovation in Corporate Social Development Award” from the Australian-Africa Minerals and Energy Group (AAMEG).

The firm, active in the heart of South Africa, has set a new standard in the realm of community engagement. Their innovative strategy was spotlighted at the Africa Down Under conference in Perth.

The accolade celebrates Orion’s unique Community Participation Framework, birthed at the Prieska Copper-Zinc Mine (PCZM) in South Africa. This initiative strives to connect with local communities deeply. Ambitious goals have been set: 50% local employment, 30% goods and services procurement, and 40% subcontracting options for the native communities.

Marcus Birch, a top figure at Orion, shared, “Orion Minerals has always put the community first. As we grow, it’s crucial that our local communities grow with us. Our bond with them is as valuable as our business itself. We’ve always embraced responsible business methods from the beginning.”

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles lead the way in responsible business. Orion stands tall, championing the need for genuine connection with everyone involved.

But Orion isn’t alone. Resolute Mining, another Aussie gem, was recognized for its sustainable initiatives in Africa earlier this year. Their Syama Gold Mine in Mali uses a hybrid solar-diesel plant. This green move reduces carbon and costs while powering the mine and local homes.

Orion keeps pushing forward. Their focus? Metals like copper, zinc, and nickel are vital for our future. They’re gearing up for big things with projects like the Okiep Copper and the Jacomynspan Battery Metals.

Ultimately, Orion’s dream is simple: Lead the charge in metals that help our planet. In doing this, they boost South Africa’s mining scene and make a real difference in local lives.
