Shell and Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) have initiated containment and clean-up efforts following an oil leak from a land-based pipeline. The spill occurred between Bukom and Bukom Kecil islands early in the morning, prompting an immediate response to prevent further environmental impact.

Quick response to pipeline leak

The Maritime and Port Authority reported that it was alerted to the oil spill at around 1 p.m., hours after the incident took place at approximately 5:30 a.m.

The leak was swiftly contained at the source, and Shell confirmed that emergency response specialists had been dispatched to manage the situation at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park.

Shell placed containment booms around the spill site and deployed vessels equipped with dispersants to address the oil spotted in nearby waters. The efforts aim to minimize the environmental damage and restore normal conditions as quickly as possible.

Clean-up efforts in full force

The Singapore Port Authority also took swift action, deploying seven of its vessels, along with drones and satellites, to locate and monitor the oil spill.

The use of advanced technology, such as drones and satellite imagery, has enhanced the authorities’ ability to track and contain the spill more effectively.

There were no reported impacts on navigation safety in the area, and the collaborative efforts between Shell and the MPA are expected to ensure a full resolution of the incident. According to Reuters, clean-up operations will continue until the area is fully cleared of any potential hazards.

Collaborative action for environmental protection

Both Shell and the MPA are committed to ensuring environmental protection and mitigating the impact of such incidents.

The swift response showcases the importance of coordination between private companies and government authorities in managing environmental risks.

As of now, Shell and the MPA have successfully contained the spill and are working to fully restore the affected areas. Further updates will be provided as clean-up operations progress.
