  • Algeria grants BP a prospecting licence in the eastern basin to boost exploration activities
  • The move is part of a strategy to develop vast underexplored energy reserves using advanced technology
  • BP’s involvement signals renewed investor confidence in Algeria’s energy sector and regulatory framework

Algeria has granted BP Plc a new prospecting authorisation in its eastern basin, as the country intensifies efforts to expand hydrocarbon exploration and attract international investment.

The approval, announced on Tuesday by ALNAFT, allows the energy giant to carry out preliminary exploration activities, including geological surveys and technical studies, aimed at assessing the resource potential of the region. However, the permit does not cover drilling or extraction, which would require separate regulatory approvals.

The move forms part of Algeria’s broader strategy to revitalise its energy sector by opening up vast underexplored areas and enhancing its appeal to global investors.

Algeria targets untapped reserves with advanced exploration strategy

According to ALNAFT, Algeria’s mining domain spans more than 1.7 million square kilometres, much of which remains largely unexplored despite its significant resource potential. Authorities are now focusing on deploying advanced exploration technologies to better understand subsurface formations in the eastern basin and determine their commercial viability.

The regulator noted that granting BP access to the basin is expected to accelerate data acquisition and improve insights into the country’s hydrocarbon reserves, ultimately supporting long-term production growth.

BP’s renewed presence in Algeria is also being viewed as a strong endorsement of the country’s investment climate and regulatory framework. ALNAFT said the development reflects growing confidence among international energy companies in Algeria’s partnership model and its commitment to fostering a stable and attractive business environment.

The initiative underscores Algeria’s ambition to strengthen its position as a key energy supplier by unlocking new reserves and modernising exploration efforts through global collaborations.
