Namibia: Planned Power Outage to Hit Kavango Regions on May 17

Kavango power outage May 17

KEY POINTS

  • Power across Kavango West and East will be cut from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 17, 2026.
  • The outage will also affect electricity supply to parts of Angola and Shakawe in Botswana.
  • Residents are urged to switch off appliances and prepare vulnerable individuals ahead of the shutdown.

Residents and businesses across Namibia’s Kavango West and East regions should mark May 17 on their calendars. Power is going off for most of the day.

NamPower is scheduled to carry out maintenance on critical electricity infrastructure that day. Nored has confirmed the outage runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

What is being fixed

Nored spokesperson Simon Lukas laid out the scope. NamPower technicians will repair a broken white phase conductor at the Mururani road crossing. They will also carry out maintenance on the Otjikoto-Rundu 132kV transmission line. Workers will replace wooden crossarms on the Mahango and Mpasi 66kV feeders, and Nored will use the same window to service its own lines.

These are load-bearing components in Namibia’s northern grid. The repairs cannot happen with live lines running.

Who will be affected

The outage covers the entire Kavango West and East regions. It will also hit electricity supply to parts of Angola and the Shakawe area in Botswana.

Nored has urged residents to treat all electrical installations as live throughout the day. Power may return without advance warning. Switch off appliances before the outage begins. Plan ahead for anyone who depends on electricity for medical or other needs. Keep refrigerators and freezers closed to hold temperature across the 12-hour window.

NamPower’s maintenance push reflects a broader effort to keep the northern grid stable as Namibia expands electricity access across the country.
