Sabah to Begin Rolling Power Cuts After Gas Supply Disruption

KEY POINTS

• Sabah will implement scheduled power cuts after a disruption at a Petronas-operated offshore gas platform reduced electricity generation.

• The outages are intended to stabilise the state’s electricity grid while repair and restoration efforts continue.

• Sabah Electricity has advised residents to monitor official updates and expects the outages to be temporary.

Thousands of electricity consumers across Sabah will experience scheduled power outages after a disruption at an offshore gas platform significantly reduced electricity generation capacity in the state’s power grid.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd announced that the temporary power rationing became necessary following an incident involving a gas platform operated by Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), which disrupted the supply of natural gas to several Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

The utility company said the reduced gas supply has affected electricity production, creating a shortfall in the amount of power available to meet consumer demand across the state.

In a statement issued on Monday, Sabah Electricity explained that scheduled power rationing would be implemented across several parts of the state as a temporary measure to prevent a wider electricity system failure.

According to the company, the controlled outages are designed to maintain the stability and reliability of the electricity grid while engineers and relevant authorities work to restore normal gas supplies and electricity generation.

The utility stressed that although the planned outages may inconvenience customers, they are necessary to avoid uncontrolled blackouts that could have a greater impact on homes, businesses and critical public services.

Restoration Efforts Underway

Sabah Electricity said it is working closely with all relevant stakeholders to restore generation capacity as quickly as possible.

The company assured consumers that every effort is being made to minimise both the duration and frequency of the scheduled outages while repair works continue.

It noted that restoring stable gas supplies to the affected Independent Power Producers remains a priority in order to return electricity generation to normal levels.

The electricity provider encouraged residents and businesses to monitor official announcements regarding affected areas and outage schedules.

Customers have been advised to obtain the latest information through the official Sabah Electricity Careline Facebook page or by contacting the Sabah Electricity Careline on 15444.

The company apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary power rationing and appealed for public understanding as restoration efforts continue.

The power supply disruption followed an incident at a Petronas-operated offshore gas platform that interrupted gas deliveries to several Independent Power Producers supplying electricity to Sabah’s grid.

Because many of the state’s power plants rely on natural gas for electricity generation, the disruption reduced overall generating capacity, forcing Sabah Electricity to introduce temporary rolling power cuts to preserve grid stability until normal operations resume.
