TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, TUPNI, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC, and their partners have strengthened science education at Government Secondary School, Kuje, in the Federal Capital Territory with the commissioning of a new five-laboratory science complex.
The facility was delivered through a partnership involving TotalEnergies, NNPC and co-venturers CNOOC, SAPETRO and Meren as part of efforts to improve access to practical science education and encourage more students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, STEM.
The complex, commissioned on Wednesday, is expected to provide students with regular access to modern laboratory equipment and practical learning opportunities, helping them better understand concepts that may otherwise remain theoretical in the classroom.
The new complex contains dedicated laboratories for chemistry, physics, biology, agriculture and home economics. Each laboratory has storage facilities and an office for the subject teacher.
The physics, chemistry and biology laboratories are equipped with subject-specific apparatus, reagents and other materials needed for practical lessons. The facilities also have wash-hand basins and taps to support safe and effective laboratory activities.
The project is designed not only to improve the quality of science teaching at Government Secondary School, Kuje, but also to position the school as a potential resource centre for neighbouring secondary schools.
Project organisers said the facility would help students develop greater interest in STEM subjects by allowing them to conduct experiments, observe scientific processes and connect classroom lessons with real-world applications.
TotalEnergies links project to education goals
Speaking at the commissioning, TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited managing director, CEO and country chair Matthieu Bouyer said the laboratory was developed to raise the standard of science education available to students in Kuje and surrounding communities.
Bouyer, who was represented by the company’s acting general manager for corporate social responsibility, Moyosola Areola, said improved access to laboratory facilities could contribute to better teaching and learning outcomes while giving students a stronger foundation for future academic and professional pursuits.
He said the project aligns with Goal 4 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses on inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.
According to him, the Kuje laboratory forms part of TotalEnergies’ wider investment in education across Nigeria, with the company supporting initiatives that span secondary and tertiary education.
