- Coalition welcomes the 30-day petrol discount as temporary relief for Nigerians.
- Group urges NNPC to sustain transparency, curb corruption and improve service delivery.
- Critics say the price cap may offer limited relief unless transport fares also fall.
The Coalition of Citizens Groups for Good Governance has welcomed the Federal Government’s planned 30-day petrol discount at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) stations, describing it as a potential source of relief for households and businesses struggling with high fuel prices.
However, the coalition has urged the state-owned oil company to ensure transparency in implementing the initiative and sustain reforms aimed at improving efficiency, reducing corruption and strengthening public confidence.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the group commended NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer Bayo Ojulari for supporting measures intended to ease the economic pressure on Nigerians.
The statement was signed by the coalition’s National President, Dr Nath Oguche, and Chidumga Odinkalu.
The coalition said the planned discount, alongside efforts to modernise the company’s operations, demonstrated how responsive leadership and institutional reforms could deliver practical benefits to citizens.
Discount could ease pressure on households
According to the group, the intervention comes at a time when high petrol prices continue to increase transportation costs and the operating expenses of businesses.
It said any initiative capable of reducing these pressures deserved recognition, particularly when accompanied by measures to improve accountability and operational efficiency.
The coalition noted that lower petrol prices could provide temporary relief to commuters, transport operators and businesses that depend on fuel for their daily activities.
It added, however, that the success of the initiative would depend on effective implementation and whether the expected benefits reach ordinary Nigerians.
The group urged NNPC management to ensure that the discount delivers measurable results rather than remaining an announcement with limited impact on consumers.
Beyond the petrol discount, the coalition praised what it described as NNPC’s efforts to strengthen transparency and introduce innovations, including self-service smart pumps.
It said such initiatives could improve operational efficiency, make services more accessible and reduce opportunities for corruption.
The group argued that NNPC’s position in Nigeria’s petroleum industry makes its performance particularly important to the wider economy and the daily lives of citizens.
According to the coalition, effective leadership requires more than routine administration. It involves addressing longstanding institutional problems, adopting better operational practices and ensuring that public resources deliver value.
The group said reforms that improve service delivery and accountability could help rebuild public confidence in the company.
It urged NNPC to maintain the momentum behind its reforms and ensure that the benefits extend to consumers across the country.
