KEY POINTS

  • NERC warns Nigerians never to touch fallen live wires or electrocuted persons with bare hands.
  • Attempting rescue without proper training can lead to additional casualties.
  • The safest action is to keep distance and immediately report incidents to electricity professionals.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has issued a nationwide safety warning urging citizens to stay away from fallen electricity cables and people being electrocuted, stressing that untrained rescue attempts could result in additional fatalities.

In its statement, the NERC emphasized that electricity does not discriminate. Touching a live wire or an electrocuted person with bare hands can instantly transfer current to another individual, turning rescuers into victims.

NERC cautioned against acting on instinct during electrical emergencies, noting that well-intentioned actions can worsen situations. Witnesses are advised to keep their distance and avoid moving victims themselves, as this could expose them to serious harm.

Call Professionals Immediately

According to the regulator, the safest response is to alert trained experts equipped to handle electrical hazards. Members of the public should promptly report such incidents to the nearest electricity distribution company rather than intervening directly.

The commission explained that the advisory applies whenever live wires are seen on the ground or someone is being shocked. It added that staying calm, informed, and cautious can prevent avoidable injuries and deaths, while encouraging Nigerians to share safety information within their communities.
