KEY POINTS

  • TCN commissioned a 300MVA transformer at Egbin substation, raising capacity from 300MVA to 450MVA.
  • The upgrade will improve power supply to Ikeja Electric customers across Ikorodu, Sagamu, Ijede, and nearby areas.
  • The project was executed in-house by TCN engineers within six weeks to strengthen grid reliability nationwide.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has commissioned a new 300-megavolt ampere (MVA) transformer at its 330/132/33kV Egbin Transmission Substation in Lagos, significantly boosting power transmission capacity in the region.

According to a statement released in Abuja by TCNโ€™s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the newly installed transformer has increased the substationโ€™s capacity from 300MVA to 450MVA. The upgrade is expected to improve bulk electricity supply and enhance system stability across several communities.

With the expanded capacity, more power will now be available for the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company to distribute to customers in Ikorodu, Sagamu, Ijede, and surrounding locations.

Officials say the upgrade will help reduce load constraints and improve supply reliability, particularly during peak demand periods when distribution companies often struggle with limited transmission capacity.

Project Delivered in Record Time

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Adeshina Adeonipekun, General Manager of Transmission for TCNโ€™s Lagos Region, disclosed that the transformer installation was completed internally by TCN engineers in just six weeks, a timeline he described as record-breaking for a project of that scale.

He emphasized that the initiative forms part of broader efforts by the agency to reinforce Nigeriaโ€™s transmission backbone and ensure more efficient nationwide power delivery.

Energy analysts note that transformer upgrades at major substations are critical for stabilising the national grid, as they increase load-handling capacity and reduce technical losses. The Egbin substation is considered a strategic node within the transmission network serving southwestern Nigeria, making the upgrade particularly significant for industrial, commercial, and residential consumers.
