KEY POINTS
- Eni discovered over 1 trillion cubic feet of gas offshore Libya, expected to supply 130 million cubic feet daily for local use and exports to Italy.
- The discovery strengthens Eni’s long-standing operations in Libya, with projected production of 162,000 boe/day by 2025.
- Three ongoing development projects, two starting this year, will boost output and reinforce Eni’s role in the global LNG and gas market.
Italian energy company Eni S.p.A. has announced a significant offshore gas discovery in Libya, estimated at more than one trillion cubic feet (Tcf). The newly discovered reserves are expected to supply approximately 130 million cubic feet of gas per day, supporting domestic energy demand in Libya while also enabling exports to Italy.
The discovery is seen as a major boost to regional gas availability and Europe’s energy diversification strategy.
Eni has operated in Libya since 1959 and remains the country’s leading international energy operator. The company projects equity production of about 162,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2025, reinforcing its dominant position in the North African energy market.
The latest discovery further consolidates Eni’s operational footprint and enhances its long-term production pipeline.
New Development Projects to Boost Output
The company currently has three development projects underway in Libya, with two scheduled to begin operations this year. These projects are expected to accelerate field development, increase production capacity, and help meet growing regional and global energy demand, particularly as Europe seeks reliable gas supplies.
Eni continues to play a significant role in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry. The company’s expanding gas portfolio, including the Libya discovery, strengthens its position as a key player in the energy transition. Analysts have recently highlighted Eni among top LNG-focused energy companies due to its growing gas reserves and supply infrastructure.
