South Africa’s power utility, Eskom, has announced a nine-hour electricity outage in Braamfischer, Soweto, on Thursday, October 29, 2026, to allow maintenance work on its distribution network.
The interruption is scheduled to begin at 9:00 and end at 18:00 on the same day. Eskom said the temporary shutdown is necessary for crews to carry out essential maintenance on distribution power lines.
The utility has urged affected residents to prepare for the interruption and monitor its official communication channels for possible changes to the schedule.
Power shutdown scheduled for Thursday
According to Eskom’s October 2026 Gauteng Cluster Connect bulletin, electricity supply will be interrupted across affected parts of Braamfischer while maintenance work is carried out.
The nine-hour shutdown will cover most of the day, potentially affecting households, businesses and other customers that depend on a continuous electricity supply.
Residents have been advised to charge mobile phones, laptops and backup batteries before the outage begins. Households may also need to plan meals and take precautions to keep refrigerated food from spoiling during the interruption.
Eskom cautioned that the maintenance schedule could change if circumstances beyond its control arise. Customers are therefore encouraged to check the utility’s communication channels for updates before and during the planned shutdown.
Eskom issues electrical safety warning
The power utility has warned residents to treat all electrical appliances and installations as live throughout the outage.
Although electricity supply will be switched off for maintenance, power could be restored without warning. Residents should therefore avoid touching exposed wiring, attempting electrical repairs or tampering with installations while the supply is interrupted.
Eskom also advised customers to switch off appliances and unplug sensitive electronic equipment where appropriate. These precautions can help reduce the risk of damage from possible power surges when electricity returns.
The utility apologised for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their cooperation while maintenance work is completed.
How residents can contact Eskom
Customers who need assistance or have questions about the interruption can use several of Eskom’s customer service channels.
Residents can access the MyEskom Customer app or contact the utility through WhatsApp on 0860037566. The USSD service is also available by dialling *120*37566#.
For electricity supply enquiries, customers can call Eskom’s contact centre on 08600 37566, which operates around the clock.
Customers seeking information about their bills can use the utility’s online customer service platform at csonline-Eskom.co.za, with bill-related enquiries available from Monday to Friday between 8:00 and 16:00.
Eskom has advised residents to stay informed about any updates to the maintenance schedule and make the necessary arrangements ahead of Thursday’s planned interruption.
