Women Leaders Drive Change in Green Technology at ASEZ Roundtable

Atlantis Special Economic Zone hosts discussion on women’s role in sustainable development

The Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) ended Women’s Month by hosting the Women in Greentech Round Table Discussion on the 30th of August 2024. The event was graced by high-profile women in leadership and emerging talents to deliberate on the importance of women in promoting sustainable green innovations for sustainable development in South Africa.

Dr Rethabile Melamu the Chief Executive Officer of the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) reiterated that women’s participation in green technology is not only good for business but critical for a suitable Just Energy Transition.

According to Melamu, ‘’women come up with solutions that are different from the rest’’. “But our participation in Greentech is very important if we are to have a sustainable and fair energy future.”

Driving Innovation and Collaboration in Greentech

Adinda Preller, Head of Business Development at Phelan Green Hydrogen laid emphasis on the need for innovation and collaboration in the green technology industry.

“The future of Greentech lies in our ability to innovate and work across sectors,” she said.

Preller praised the role of women in driving the green economy forward, noting that, “Women have always been at the forefront of change, and our leadership is more critical than ever.”

Fezeka Stuurman of the Cultiver Group was also in the roundtable, she said that diversity is vital in the shift towards a sustainable economy.

“We must ensure that marginalized communities are part of the decision-making process,” she said.

Stuurman further made known her commitment towards supporting local communities by coming up with initiatives such as the Just Energy Transition.

Mentorship and Inspiration for the Next Generation

According to a report by ESI Africa, the event also engaged ten schoolgirls from Atlantis who joined the discussion and also got to learn about potential careers in green technology. Moderator Siyasanga Tetyana highlighted the need for proper guidance and training specifically for young ladies interested in entering the business.

“It’s our responsibility to mentor and guide these young women so they can become the leaders of tomorrow,” she concluded.

The Women in Greentech Round Table signifies a giant step towards the achievements of gender parity and sustainability. ASEZ remains actively involved in developing the green economy and at the same time empowering women to ensure South Africa’s sustainable future.
