President Donald Trump has ordered a suspension of new federal offshore wind leasing, citing environmental and economic concerns.

Unlike the previous policies in renewable energy, he condemned offshore wind turbines as ‘ugly’ and destructive to wildlife.

The suspension, announced through executive action, halts leasing on the U.S. outer continental shelf while an environmental and economic review is conducted.

Environmental and economic concerns fuel suspension

Speaking about the decision, Trump voiced his disapproval of offshore wind farms, claiming without evidence that they are responsible for an increase in whale deaths along the U.S. East Coast.

“They ruin your neighborhood,” he said, describing turbines as costly and disruptive to natural landscapes.

Renewable projects already underway by companies like Dominion Energy, Orsted, and Avangrid will keep moving – even though no new leasing bids can start.

Advocates of renewable energy are worried President Trump’s decision could damage efforts made towards America’s push for energy diversification.

Offshore wind advocates push back

Renewable energy proponents, including Hillary Bright, executive director of Turn Forward, expressed alarm over the suspension.

According to Reuters, Bright emphasized the importance of wind energy in addressing national energy needs and combating climate change.

“A national energy emergency requires us to unleash all necessary sources of American energy – including offshore wind,” Bright stated.

The new action opposes what Joe Biden’s administration did before him by trying to decarbonize the energy market while growing offshore wind power.

Broader energy strategy favors oil and gas

The move supports Trump’s plan to boost domestic petroleum and gas extraction while exiting the 2015 Paris climate pact. His administration chose to support traditional energy methods instead of renewable power.

Renewable energy supporters say stopping new offshore wind leases will slow the path toward cleaner power sources. As Trump prioritizes traditional energy sectors, the future of renewable energy development faces significant challenges.
