  • Tinubu lauds NNPCL for reviving Port Harcourt refinery’s operations.
  • Swift action urged for Warri and Kaduna refinery reactivations.
  • Focus on energy sufficiency and export capacity through Renewed Hope Agenda.

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to fast-track the reactivation of the second Port Harcourt refinery, alongside the Warri and Kaduna refineries. The directive follows the successful revitalization of the Port Harcourt refinery, marked by its resumption of petroleum product loading on November 26, 2024.

In a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu commended NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, for his “unwavering dedication and commitment” in overcoming challenges to achieve this milestone.

The President also acknowledged former President Muhammadu Buhari for initiating the comprehensive rehabilitation of Nigeria’s refineries, as well as the African Export-Import Bank for financing the critical project.

A Call for Swift Action on Refinery Repairs

Celebrating the progress at the Port Harcourt refinery, Tinubu urged the NNPCL to expedite the reactivation of the second Port Harcourt refinery and the facilities in Warri and Kaduna. He emphasized that these efforts, combined with the contributions of privately owned refineries, would significantly boost Nigeria’s domestic production capacity.

“Our goal is to eliminate the paradox of Nigeria, a major crude oil producer, being unable to refine its resources for domestic consumption,” Tinubu said.

The President further highlighted the administration’s commitment to transforming Nigeria into a major energy hub, with special attention on the gas sector.

Commitment to Transparency and Infrastructure Renewal

According to a report by Vanguard, Tinubu called for integrity, patience, and accountability in rebuilding the nation’s critical infrastructure, urging public and private stakeholders to uphold trust in their service.

“In alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda, we remain committed to achieving energy sufficiency, enhancing energy security, and boosting Nigeria’s export capacity,” the statement added.

Milestone Celebrated, Challenges Ahead

The revitalization of the Port Harcourt refinery is a significant step forward for Nigeria’s energy sector. However, Tinubu’s administration faces the challenge of ensuring the timely repair of other refineries to align with the country’s goal of achieving energy independence and economic prosperity.

With these developments, Nigeria is positioning itself for a future where it can fully refine its oil domestically, bolstering economic resilience and creating a sustainable energy infrastructure.
