Tony Elumelu’s Heirs Energies has launched a tree-planting initiative along one of its key pipeline corridors in the Niger Delta, marking a step the company says reflects its commitment to running an energy business that does not come at the expense of the environment it operates in.
The Agbada Green Corridor Initiative was formally launched on June 9, 2026, along the Agbada Non-Associated Gas corridor in the Omuohia community in Rivers State. The event brought together representatives of the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, the OML 17 Host Communities Development Trust, community leaders and Heirs Energies staff.
Bola Bode, Senior Vice President of Production, represented CEO Osa Igiehon at the launch. He described the initiative as a direct expression of how the company views its responsibility to the communities and landscapes around it.
“As we continue to grow production and expand our oil and gas business, we recognise that our success is closely linked to the wellbeing of our host communities and the health of the environment in which we operate,” he said. “The Agbada Green Corridor Initiative is one expression of our commitment to responsible operations and sustainable development.”
Built on community and government partnership
The tree-planting exercise was conducted in partnership with the Rivers State Ministry of Environment and the Self Help and Rural Development Association, known as SHERDA, with additional support from the OML 17 Host Communities Development Trust and local community stakeholders.
Representatives of the Rivers State Ministry of Environment commended the initiative. They also made the broader point that partnerships between government, industry and communities are the foundation of any meaningful environmental protection effort in producing regions.
Part of a wider sustainability push
The Agbada Green Corridor Initiative sits inside a larger sustainability agenda at Heirs Energies that covers environmental stewardship, community partnership and long-term value creation. The company describes its philosophy as proving that energy production and environmental responsibility are not competing goals.
Since assuming operatorship of OML 17 in 2021, Heirs Energies has more than doubled oil production to over 50,000 barrels per day and tripled gas output to more than 135 million standard cubic feet per day. The company contributes approximately 5 percent of Nigeria’s total oil production and an equal share of domestic gas supply. It is majority-owned by Heirs Holdings, the investment group founded and chaired by Tony Elumelu.
