South Africa Reaches Financial Close on $4.1 Million Battery Projects

KEY POINTS

  • The Oasis project is expected to add 257 MW/1,028 MWh of capacity.
  • Mulilo Partners secures R7 billion financing.
  • Initiative supports grid stability and sustainability.

South Africa has reached a major milestone in its renewable energy transition, as three cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, collectively known as Oasis, progress toward implementation.

These projects are part of the nation’s inaugural Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP), aimed at enhancing Eskom’s grid stability and accelerating the shift to sustainable energy solutions.

South Africa advances grid stability with batteries

Under a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Eskom, the Oasis projects will leverage advanced battery storage technology to store energy during off-peak periods and distribute it when demand is highest. This initiative not only addresses the country’s grid challenges but also reduces reliance on fossil fuels, significantly lowering carbon emissions. Construction is set to begin before December, underscoring South Africa’s commitment to achieving energy sustainability.

Highlights of the Oasis projects

Oasis Mookodi
The first of the three projects, the Oasis Mookodi facility in Vryburg, North-West Province, boasts a capacity of 77 MW AC/308 MWh. It achieved financial close earlier this year, paving the way for construction.

Additional Projects
The Oasis Aggeneis and Oasis Nieuwehoop facilities, located in the Northern Cape, have also secured funding. Together, the three projects will deliver a combined capacity of 257 MW/1,028 MWh.

Financing and Collaboration
The R7 billion ($4.1 million) initiative is spearheaded by Mulilo, in partnership with EDF International, Pele Green Energy, and Gibb Crede. Local lenders, including Standard Bank and ABSA, have provided debt financing.

“This achievement is a landmark for Mulilo and aligns with our strategy to diversify and strengthen South Africa’s energy infrastructure,” said Jan Fourie, CEO of Mulilo.

Driving sustainability and energy security

The Oasis initiative represents South Africa’s growing commitment to renewable energy and technological innovation. By integrating battery storage solutions into its energy framework, the country aims to address ongoing energy challenges while ensuring long-term security and sustainability.

Mulilo and its partners have plans to expand their portfolio of battery energy storage systems, building on the momentum of the Oasis projects. These developments signify a vital step in aligning private-sector innovation with national energy goals, setting a precedent for future advancements in renewable energy infrastructure.

As South Africa navigates its energy transition, the Oasis project highlights the importance of collaboration, innovation, and investment in building a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
