KEY POINTS

  • Dangote Refinery supplied 40.1 million litres of petrol daily in January, up from 32 million in December.
  • Nigeria’s daily petrol demand was 60.2 million litres, with imports of 24.8 million litres filling the gap.
  • The refinery has reached full operational capacity of 650,000 barrels per day and is undergoing performance validation tests

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, has reported that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery increased its domestic supply of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to 40.1 million litres per day in January.

The figure represents an 8-million-litre rise from the 32 million litres recorded in December.

Production vs. Demand Gap Persists

According to the regulator’s January report, the refinery’s output exceeded 60 percent of its projected 75 million litres daily supply target. National PMS consumption during the period stood at 60.2 million litres per day.

To bridge the shortfall, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and other importers brought in an average of 24.8 million litres daily, bringing total market supply to about 64.9 million litres per day.

The facility recently announced it had reached its full design capacity of 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day, attributing the achievement to optimisation of its Crude Distillation Unit and Motor Spirit production block.

The company said it has begun a 72-hour performance testing phase with its technology partner UOP to confirm operational efficiency and ensure global standards are met.

Earlier, the President and CEO of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, disclosed during a visit by the South-South Development Commission that the refinery intended to supply 50 million litres of petrol daily from December 2025 into early 2026 to guarantee steady fuel availability nationwide, especially during the festive period.
