  • The bank aims to close financing gaps in Africa’s energy sector.

The Federal Government confirmed that the Africa Energy Bank (AEB), with an initial capitalization of $5 billion, will start operations on January 28, 2025. This bank, aimed at addressing financing gaps in Africa’s energy sector, will focus on supporting oil and gas industries. By bolstering investment across the continent, the AEB will work to improve sustainable energy growth, expand access to reliable energy, and support economic progress.

According to a report by The Punch, ambassador Nicholas Ella, the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, announced the launch at the 19th Executive Board meeting of the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO) in Yaoundé, Cameroon. With representatives from 13 African nations in attendance, Ella emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to the bank’s success and its goal of enhancing energy accessibility and growth for African nations.

Ella stated, “This marks a pivotal moment for Africa’s energy future. The headquarters in Abuja is under active renovation, and we are fully committed to delivering it on schedule. With President Bola Tinubu’s support and that of the National Assembly, Nigeria is ready to meet all requirements for the bank’s success.”

Nigeria secures hosting rights for energy bank’s headquarters

The AEB, initially funded with $5 billion, addresses the urgent need for sustainable financing in Africa’s energy sector, which faces significant investment challenges. By closing financing gaps, the bank intends to foster growth in oil and gas across the continent, particularly in areas where energy access remains scarce. The establishment of the AEB will allow African countries to harness their energy resources more effectively and independently.

After a competitive selection process, Nigeria won the hosting rights for the AEB headquarters in July 2024, edging out Ghana, Algeria, South Africa, and the Benin Republic. The selection highlights Nigeria’s strategic influence within APPO and its commitment to advancing energy development across Africa.

Nigeria commits resources for successful launch

At the meeting, Ella reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to implement the bank’s operations swiftly, backed by government support. “Our Technical Team inspected the headquarters building on May 24, 2024, and renovation is progressing quickly to ensure readiness by January 2025,” he added. The Nigerian government is allocating resources for this project and remains dedicated to fulfilling all requirements for hosting the AEB.

The Africa Energy Bank offers substantial benefits to Africa, especially for countries seeking to strengthen energy development and foster cooperation within the continent. By providing financing tailored to Africa’s energy needs, the AEB will enable greater energy independence, reduce reliance on foreign investment, and drive sustainable growth across the region.
